Backup is something obvious - everyone should be aware of it - the same goes for the issue of data security. "To backup or not to backup?" - it's not a dilemma. There are only various options and one question: Which will be the best business solution? Here are the basic ones that allow you to keep your data safe:
Hardware and software RAID
RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) means the cooperation of two or more hard drives. Such a solution provides additional capabilities which are not available when a single disk is used. Using RAID gives the ability to enlarge data space, increase reliability and data security in case a single disc malfunctions, and it accelerates data transfer. RAID is not strictly a backup solution, it improves disk performance and will minimize losses in the case of failure of one disk. After all, it is a first and fundamental solution for data security.
With DSS V6 there are two possibilities for RAID implementation - software RAID (based on CPU) and hardware RAID. The former may be perfect as a low cost solution for a home or small company. The latter offers higher performance - especially for more extensive and larger implementations.
The benefits of hardware RAID are: faster rebuilds, higher write throughput, the possibility of disk hot swapping, and write back caching (BBU) etc.
Software RAID offers higher complexity (a mix of different partitions and hardware RAID is possible). It may be also better in case of RAID 0 and RAID 1 implementations.
Data (file) and volume replication
Open-E DSS V6 - as a professional software - allows for launching both data and volume replication.
Volume replication is responsible for the synchronizing of whole logical units via a network. It is block-based and is very similar to RAID 1 (the only difference is if a network connection is broken, only the changed data will be "rebuilt" at the destination - it means the destination will be rebuilt as a copy of the source volume). Volume replication (in this case: synchronous volume replication) may be a good solution for NAS logical volumes. There are two benefits of it: data redundancy and maximum safety. The main drawbacks are high costs and transfer speed while the WAN is being used. It means that synchronous volume replication will be a better choice for LAN networks.
Data (File) Replication is associated with files and also uses a network connection. Open-E DSS V6 (which is built on snapshot replication) comes in handy in cases where data is not frequently modified. Such modifications can be significant because any changes between snapshots are not monitored. Data (File) Replication (in this case: asynchronous Data (File) Replication) may prove to be the answer for problems with a slow WAN connection during synchronous volume replication.
DSS V6 also supports local backup for Dynamic Units like local HDDs, USB drives (USB Storage Support) or tape drives - that are designed especially for storing backup data. Shortly, such a solution allows businesses to keep data safe physically - by storing it in different locations on a removable unit. Moreover, it also provides the possibility of real-time backups. When there is a need to backup an NAS server, there is no obligation to shut it down if DSS V6 is being used.
Functionalities provided by Open-E storage software help improve the backup process and reduce its cost. As for the use of removable units, it can widely increase data security by eliminating the various factors that have a direct impact on an entire hardware facility.
Four servers and one hundred workstations - how to back them all up? One by one? Backup agents will come to the rescue!
Using backup agents on every machine significantly improves the backup process. In a nutshell, each unit running the appropriate software can be operated from one location. This accelerates the backup process significantly. It also helps to avoid common errors generated when using non-automated processes.
In order to allow for flexibility in deployment, DSS V6 was equipped with the possibility of backing up NAS servers with software from Veritas, Dantz, CA BrightStor and ARCserve. Open-E storage software guarantees an improvement of data transfer and provides network security. It also allows for task monitoring, browsing directories in real time and supports cross-platform backup. These features place it at the forefront of the storage and data security industry.
The variety of possibilities given by Open-E DSS V6 allows for implementing many methods of backup, creating a large range of possibilities for small, medium and large enterprises. The flexibility of Open-E storage software allows for customizing solutions and modifying them - to coincide with a growing company infrastructure. By combining it with the additional functionalities of DSS V6 - that offer various forms of automation - the impact of the "human factor" can be reduced to a minimum. Therefore, it enhances the safety of a company's most important resource - data.
