At Ahead-IT, we offer server and storage solutions with high availability
; your data remain available even when there is a power outage. Luckily, the risk of losing your or your customers’ data is very, very small.
But to this day, there are still some liabilities. Servers can get stolen, catch fire, break down after an accident, etcetera. You can never be fully prepared for misfortunes like these, but there are some ways you can anticipate disasters and recover your data afterwards
Here are some tips:
Have virtual replicas
A replica is a complete copy of your virtual server, and can be fired up immediately when a problem occurs. Virtual replicas are a good way to limit downtimes and data losses a great deal.
At Ahead-IT, we recommend a combination of Veeam software
and either a VMWare SAN
or an Open-E SAN
You will need a backup to restore data you’ve lost. We recommend doing more than just a random backup every now and then – even though those might come in handy as well. Try to develop a backup strategy that automatically covers longer periods of time.
Think about strategies that work for you
Consider at which intervals you want a replica to be made. For instance, cloning your server every hour means there’s only sixty minutes of data you can lose at most. On the other hand, taking a lot of snapshots will slow down your SAN.
Configure server to take full backups every so many days, with incremental backups every so many hours. Make sure to test these backups regularly.
Lastly, make sure you have (some of) your backups and replicas stored in another space than the one you have your main setup in. That way, whenever there is an outage, a fire or your servers get stolen in the one place, you still haven’t lost all your data entirely.
