At the moment there are 3 types of storage on the market, from fast to … less fast:
- NVME drive: flash storage, directly connected on the PCI-e bus of the CPU. The result is clear, 10 times lower access time in comparison with SATA/SAS SSD and up to 1 000 000 IOPS per NVME drive. Really reliable, extremely fast, very low failure rate.
- SATA and SAS SSD (Solid State Drives): also flash storage, here you’ll have the highest performance, sometimes up to 100 times faster than nearline SATA/SAS. The highest IOPS and lowest access time. However the price per GB is a lot higher than with nearline SATA/SAS. Really reliable, very low failure rate.
- Nearline SATA/SAS drive: these are the classical 7200 rpm disks. Not fast, but very affordable per TB. Those drives contain moving components, therefore they are less wear-resistant, reliable till 5 years of service.
